A New Class of Anthelmintic

  • Derquantel is the first commercial member of a new anthelmintic class, the Spiroindoles (SI)
  • Derquantel's novel mode of action sets it apart from other anthelmintics. Derquantel acts as an antagonist by blocking the effect of acetylcholine, to cause flaccid paralysis and explusion of nematodes
  • Derquantel has excellent efficacy against most significant nematodes in sheep, including  Haemonchus  contortus, Trichostrongylus colubriformis and Nematodirus spp. However, derquantel has less than 95% efficacy against Teladorsagia (Ostertagia) circumcincta and some large bowel worms.

A Novel Combination

  • Zoetis scientists advanced the discovery of derquantel further by combining it with an endectocide, abamectin
  • Abamectin belongs to the macrocyclic lactone (ML) class and is a potent broad spectrum anthelmintic
  • Derquantel and abamectin have similar pharmacokinetic profiles for the ideal combination drench
  • Research has demonstrated that combinations of broad-spectrum anthelmintics are useful to delay the development of anthelmintic resistance, particularly in the very early stages of resistance development.

STARTECT the combination of derquantel and abamectin

  • Provides excellent broad-spectrum efficacy
  • Lowers the resistance selection pressure, providing sustainability and protection of the novel active anthelmintic, derquantel
  • Meets the need for a new active family to overcome resistance to other anthelmintic families
